Episode 458: 3 Things Everyone Should Learn To Sell

3 Things Everyone Should Learn How to Sell

When I was a fresh-out-of-high-school intern at CBS in 2009, I learned a piece of career advice that has stayed with me for 16 years: at some point in your career, everyone should work in sales.

At 18, I didn’t fully understand why.

Now, after more than a decade of building a career in marketing, branded content, media, and podcasting, I totally get it.

Because sales isn’t just about selling a product. It’s about understanding people, communicating value, handling rejection, advocating for yourself, and getting someone from “I don’t know” to “yes.”

In this episode of Dreams In Drive, I’m going back to that early career lesson and breaking down three things I believe everyone should learn how to sell: yourself, a product or idea, and a vision.

1. Learn How to Sell Yourself

Selling yourself starts with understanding your personal brand.

What are you good at? What are your strengths? What makes you different? And can you clearly articulate the value you bring to the table?

Whether you’re interviewing for a job, asking for a promotion, networking, pitching an opportunity, or simply trying to figure out what’s next, knowing how to communicate your unique skillset and differentiation is a powerful form of self-advocacy.

Being good at what you do is important. But you also need to know how to communicate why what you do matters.

2. Learn How to Sell a Product or Idea

Sales can teach you a lot about human psychology, desire, and decision-making.

One of the questions I’ve learned to keep in mind is:

“What’s in it for me?”

Once you understand what someone actually wants, needs, or cares about, you can communicate your idea differently.

And this applies way beyond traditional sales.

You’re pitching an idea to your boss. Trying to get a client on board. Convincing someone to listen to your podcast. Getting your kids to eat something new. Trying to get your friends to agree on where you’re going to dinner.

We’re constantly trying to influence decisions.

Learning how to understand the why behind someone’s yes can make you a much better communicator in almost every area of your life.

3. Learn How to Sell a Vision

The final thing I think everyone should learn how to sell is a vision.

Because sometimes you’re not selling something that exists yet.

You’re selling what could exist.

The ability to define a vision, communicate it clearly, and get other people excited enough to rally behind it is a powerful leadership skill.

But there’s another benefit: learning how to recognize when a vision isn’t clearly defined.

Not every opportunity deserves your yes. Not every person with a big idea knows where they’re going. And not every vision aligns with your values or your growth.

Being able to evaluate a vision — and decide whether you actually want to be part of building it — is just as important as knowing how to communicate one.

Your Dream Driver Homework

Ask yourself:

Can I sell myself?

Can I sell a product or idea?

Can I sell a vision?

Because sometimes the dream isn’t the problem.

Sometimes we just haven’t learned how to sell it yet.

If this episode resonated with you, share it with a friend who needs to hear it.

Keep dreaming. Keep driving.
